ENGINE • Dirt entering engine through cracks in air filter or ducts
• Engine oil dirty or contaminated
Spark Plug Fouling
• Spark plug cap loose or faulty Excessive Smoke and Carbon Buildup
• Incorrect spark plug heat range or gap • Excessive piston-to-cylinder clearance
• PVTsystem calibrated incorrectly/ components worn • Wet sumping
or mis-adjusted • Worn rings, piston, or cylinder
• Fuel quality poor (old) or octane too high • Worn valve guides or seals
• Low compression • Restricted breather
• Restricted exhaust • Air filter dirty or contaminated 3
• Weak ignition (loose coil ground, faulty coil, or stator)
• Restricted air filter (main or pre-cleaner) or breather Piston Failure - Scoring
system • Lack of lubrication

Excessive Smoke and Carbon Buildup
Engine Turns Over But Fails To Start
• Excessive piston-to-cylinder clearance
• No fuel • Wet sumping due to over-full crankcase
• Dirt in fuel line or filter • Worn rings, piston, or cylinder
• Fuel will not pass through fuel valve • Worn valve guides or seals
• Fuel pump inoperative/restricted • Restricted breather
• Tank vent plugged or pinched • Air filter dirty or contaminated
• Engine flooded
• Low compression (high cylinder leakage) Low Compression
• No spark (Spark plug fouled) ignition component
failure • Cylinder head gasket leak
• No valve clearance (cam wear)
Engine Does Not Turn Over • Cylinder or piston worn
• Piston rings worn, leaking, broken, or sticking
• Dead battery • Bent valve or stuck valve
• Starter motor does not turn • Valve spring broken or weak
• Engine seized, rusted, or mechanical failure
• Valve not seating properly (bent or carbon
accumulated on sealing surface)
Engine Runs But Will Not Idle
• Rocker arm sticking
• Restricted fuel supply
• Low compression Backfiring
• Crankcase breather restricted
• Fouled spark plug or incorrect plug or plug gap
• Intake system air leaks
Engine Idles But Will Not Accelerate
• Exhaust system air leaks
• Spark plug fouled/weak spark • Valve sticking
• Broken throttle cable • Ignition system faulty:
• Obstruction in air intake • Spark plug cap cracked / broken
• Air box removed (reinstall all intake components) • Ignition coil faulty
• Incorrect ignition timing • Ignition or kill switch circuit faulty
• Restricted exhaust system • Poor connections in ignition system
• Cam worn excessively • Ignition timing incorrect
• Sheared flywheel key
Engine Has Low Power
• Spark plug fouled
• Cylinder, piston, ring, or valve wear or damage (check
compression)
• PVT not operating properly
• Restricted exhaust muffler
• Cam worn excessively
Piston Failure - Scoring
• Lack of lubrication
