FUEL SYSTEM

CYLINDER MISFIRE DETECTION • Fuel pressure is within specification
                                                                         • Fresh/good quality fuel is in the fuel tank
NOTE • Engine mechanical is good (leak down, timing)
                                                                         • Confirm the belt is in good condition, specifically
This process only applies to some MY15 and later
models. looking for signs of hour-glassing
                                                                         • Confirm primary clutch operation (worn/incorrect
Refer to this procedure only if one of the codes shown weights, loose spider/jam nut)
below is displayed in Digital Wrench.
                                                                         • Confirm secondary clutch operation (sliders, rollers,
                                                                           helix)
The ECU monitors crankshaft speed via the crankshaft
position sensor. A misfire will cause a fluctuation in
crankshaft speed. A code will set and turn on the check EFI TROUBLESHOOTING
engine light after an engine misfire threshold/rate is
detected that is above a pre-determined limit. This Fuel Starvation / Lean Mixture
threshold varies based on engine speed. Symptoms: Hard start or no start, bog, backfire, popping
One or more of the following codes will be set if a misfire through intake / exhaust, hesitation, detonation, low 4
occurs: power, spark plug erosion, engine runs hot, surging, high
                                                                         idle, idle speed erratic.

                   • P0302 (SPN 65592/FMI 7) Misfire Detected, Cylinder • Restricted tank vent, or routed improperly
2 (PTO) • Fuel lines or fuel injectors restricted
                   • P0314 (SPN 65590/FMI 7) Misfire Detected, Cylinder • Fuel filter plugged
Not Identified • Fuel pump inoperative
                                                                         • Air leak in system
Once a cylinder misfire code is set, the following events • Intake air leak (throttle shaft, intake ducts, air box
                   will occur: cover)

                   • If the cylinder can be detected by the ECU (code
P0301 or P0302), the ECU will deactivate the fuel Symptoms: Fouls spark plugs, black, sooty exhaust

limiting how far the throttle plate opens.
                                                                         • Air filter dirty/plugged
One the key is cycled, the trouble code (s) will show • Poor fuel quality (old fuel)
current but there will be no fuel injector deactivation or • Fouled spark plug
throttle limitation unless the misfiring continues to occur. • Injector failure
The check engine light will remain illuminated until there
are 4000 engine revolutions (i. e. 4000 RPM for one Poor Idle
minute) without a significant misfire being detected. Symptom: Idle Too High (if > 1400 RPM when warm).
Once this condition is met, the check engine light will turn
off and the code(s) will show as historic. • Throttle stop screw tampering
                                                                         • Throttle cable sticking, improperly adjusted, routed

to see if the check engine light turns off. If it does not turn
off, diagnose by verifying the following items: Symptom: Idle Too Low (if < 1100 RPM when warm).
                   • Low battery voltage (loose connection, low charge, • Plugged air filter
bad battery) • Leaking injector (rich condition)
                   • Faulty voltage regulator • Belt dragging
                   • Ignition Coil and connections are good • Throttle stop screw tampering
                   • Spark plugs wires are secure
                   • The correct spark plugs are installed and the plugs are Symptom: Erratic Idle.
                     not fouled
                   • Crankshaft Position Sensor tests good • Throttle cable incorrectly adjusted
                   • Wiring to the Crankshaft Position Sensor, ECU and • Air Leaks, dirty injector
Ignition Coil are not damaged. Chassis ground is clean • TMAP damaged (check with Digital Wrench®)
