1. Remove the balance shaft assembly. See Balance
7. Remove the balance shaft from the crankcase.

NOTE 2. Remove the water pump seal q Refer to Water
Pump Service - ACE, page ).
Tapping with a soft-faced hammer on the water pump
drive end of the shaft may be required.
8. Inspect drive gear for broken or damaged teeth.
9. Inspect bearing surfaces for scoring or signs of wear.
10. Inspect / replace the balance shaft bearings in the
upper crankcase. See: PTO and MAG Side

NOTE
Due to extremely close tolerances and minimal wear,
counterbalance shaft ball bearings must be inspected
visually and by feel. Look for signs of discoloration,
scoring or galling. Turn the inner race of each bearing.
The bearings should turn smoothly and quietly. The
outer race of each bearing should fit tightly in the
crankcase bore. The inner race should be firm with 3. Remove the oil seal w from the PTO side of the

4. Support the engine case on the MAG side in a
suitable shop press. Carefully remove the balance
shaft out the mag side of the upper engine case.
CRANKCASE SEPARATION
NOTE
Before the crankcase can be separated, be sure the
entire top end, stator cover assembly and counter-
balance shaft assembly are removed from the engine
as outlined in this chapter.
1. Support the engine so oil sump cover side is facing
upward.
2. Remove the lower crankcase fasteners q.
