VALVE CLEARANCE INSPECTION 8. Use drive clutch to rotate the crankshaft until the cam
chain sprocket timing marks are aligned with the
NOTE gasket surface as shown.
Valve clearance inspection should be performed on a NOTE
cold engine, at room temperature.
Intake cam sprocket should have “I” marks aligned with
gasket surface and the exhaust cam sprocket should 2
1. Remove the seats and disconnect the negative (-)
battery cable. have “E” marks aligned with gasket surface.
2. Remove side panels and front cab. Remove the fuel
tank on non-touring models.
3. Remove the air box cover and PVT ducting tubes.
4. Remove the spark plug high tension lead q and
remove the spark plug w.
CAUTION
Place a clean shop towel into the spark plug cavity to
prevent dirt from entering.
9. Measure the valve clearance of each valve using a
thickness (feeler) gauge. Record the measurement if
clearance is out of specification.
5. Remove the rocker cover bolts e, cover r and
gasket.
NOTE
It may be necessary to tap the cover lightly with a soft-
faced hammer to loosen it from the cylinder head.
10. If the valve clearance is out of specification, proceed
NOTE
to “Valve Clearance Adjustment” (see Chapter 3).
Discard valve cover Isolators upon removal. New
Isolators are required once removed. MEASUREMENT
Intake Valve Clearance (cold):
Inspect the valve cover gasket and replace if damaged .006 ± .002 in. (0.152 ± .050 mm)
or signs of leaking are present.
6. Remove the valve cover from the engine. MEASUREMENT
7. Remove the outer PVTcover and drive belt as shown Exhaust Valve Clearance (cold):
in chapter 6. .008 ± .002 in. (0.203 ± .050 mm)
11. Repeat steps 8-10 until all (4) valves have been
inspected.
