9. If the valve clearance is out of specification, proceed EXHAUST - SPARK ARRESTOR
to Chapter 3 – Valve Clearance Check / Adjustment,
page 3.63. WARNING
MEASUREMENT Do not clean spark arrestor immediately after the
engine has been run, as the exhaust system becomes
Intake Valve Clearance (cold):
.006 ± .002″ (0.152 ± .050 mm) very hot. Serious burns could result from contact with
the exhaust components. Allow components to cool
sufficiently before proceeding.
MEASUREMENT Wear eye protection and gloves.
Never run the engine in an enclosed area. Exhaust

10. Repeat steps 8-9 until all four valves have been
inspected. Periodically clean spark arrestor to remove accumulated
carbon.
11. Inspect the valve cover seal and replace if
necessary. 1. Allow engine and exhaust system to completely cool.
12. Install the valve cover and spark plug as outlined in 2. Remove the retaining screw, washer and spark

13. Install drive belt and outer clutch cover and eight 3. Use a non-synthetic brush to clean the arrestor
retaining screws (see Chapter 6 – Belt Installation, screen.
page 5.12). Torque to specification.
4. Inspect the screen for wear and damage. Replace if
TORQUE needed.
Outer Clutch Cover Screws: 5. Reinstall the arrestor and torque the screw to
100 in-lbs (12 Nm) specification.
14. Connect the negative (-) battery cable to the battery.
15. Start the engine to ensure proper operation.
16. Reinstall the cargo box access panel and seats (see
Chapter 10) .
